Fly-fishing Cuba is unapparelled to many other salt water destinations. The diversity of the species and quality waters with little angling pressure makes this place amazing.
Jardines de la Reina or Gardens of the Queen is amazing! Only in recent years has this flats fishery been developed, and you are fishing waters that have not seen sport fishing for nearly fifty years. Cuba has given these pristine areas protection as Cuban National Marine Parks, where no commercial fishing is allowed other than for lobster. Flats fish like Tarpon, Permit, Bonefish, Snook, Mutton Snapper, Barracuda, and a variety of Jacks are found in incredible numbers and since the fishing pressure is so light in these areas the fish rarely encounter sport fishermen and are unusually easy to catch.
Avalon has several operations spread throughout Cuba in which all have a slightly different appeal. Cayo Largo is located about 40 miles south of Cuba. This operation offers great fishing for Permit as well as Tarpon, Bone Fish and Snook. This region is a must for the salt water angler who is looking to hit the Grand Slam which is hooking into three types of the mentioned species.
The region is so diverse you can walk beautiful sand flats for hours on a day hunting large Bone Fish and Permit. You can cast to Snook in the Mangroves trying to tease them out, or rip streamers tight up against the sand beaches where they like to cruise along looking for small prey. Mangroves offer great Tarpon fishing, and this is also where large Snappers readily take your fly.
Your stay is on a very nice yacht style boat with comfortable rooms, good food and plenty of unspoiled waters to chase all sorts of fish. Another option to the Yacht stays, they do offer resort style accommodation on land. Guides are very experienced and throwing shots to Permit, Tarpon, or Bonefish from the deck of a flats boat is the best it can get.
Your day starts with a great breakfast followed by your guide meeting you at the boat to discover various flats to fly fish all sorts of species like Tarpon, Bone fish (big bones), Permit, and Snook. Travelling from flat to flat there are lots of creeks in which you will hook into several types of Mutton Snapper, small Sharks, Jack Crevalle, Barracudas and numerous other types of fish.
After fishing both Cayo Largo and staying at the resort fishing Gardens of the Queen, the quality of your fishing experience is second to none. There is never a dull moment as the waters are pristine and teaming with fish.
Many airlines offer great flights to connect you directly to Cayo Largo from Canada.
